Blogging While Traveling

For most people, traveling and getting to know new places can be one of the greatest pleasures of life, and it may bring a lot of satisfactions to any voyager.

As everything in life, not every travel goes as smoothly as people would like, and it takes the beauty of traveling away.

Here is a list of Do’s and Don’ts gathered from the experience of travel writers around the world to help you get the most out of you trip and avoid unwanted situations, like losing your luggage, passport, or valuables when you travel.

Do’s

  1. Use luggage with prints or bright colors and stay away from black luggage, that way it will be easier to recognize your luggage upon your arrival to the luggage claim or in case your luggage gets lost, it will be easier to be identified for the airline personnel.
  2. Take a picture of you and your luggage and have a printed picture handy. In case your luggage gets lost or misplaced, it will help the airline personnel to find it.
  3. If you use black luggage, one good trick is to tie a bright color wide ribbon or scarf to it. You may also put stickers, or stitch large patches on it. Make sure your luggage looks unique.
  4. Bring plastic bags or zip-lock bags to help you separate used clothes or wet clothes from your clean and dry ones. These bags can be used to isolate liquid shampoo, soaps, make up, or perfumes, and prevent spills from damaging your other belongings. Plastic bags can also be helpful in packing little things like razors, earrings, batteries, or bracelets.
  5. If you need to bring your passport with you, make sure to bring a copy of your passport and keep it on a separate safe place.
  6. Before checking out from the hotel room, check the room safe, the closet, all the drawers, the sheets, electrical outlets, the refrigerator, and even underneath the bed to make sure you don’t leave your belongings behind, like your cell phone charger, money, jewelry, medicines, important documents, or your favorite pair of shoes.

Don’ts

  1. Over packing will cost you more in baggage check fees, it will make your luggage heavier, and it will take away space to bring anything from the country or city your visiting. Try being practical and packing only the minimum you will need.
  2. Carrying large amounts of cash make you vulnerable pickpockets, or losing it. When traveling it is highly recommended to use plastic instead of cash, for it will help you to maintain a better record of your expenses, and it will prevent losing large amounts of money at once. It is always easier to replace a debit or credit card if it gets lost or stolen than getting back your lost or stolen cash.
  3. Bringing unnecessary valuables to you trips, like expensive jewelry, or highly sophisticated electronic devices, may turn your trip into a nightmare if you lose any of those things. If possible, try to leave all of that at home. If you need a computer, sometimes using the business at the hotel may have a cost, but it is certainly less that losing your own computer and all the information in it.

Some incidents can’t be prevented; the important thing is to take some of these simple steps to minimize its effects, and have a back up plan to resolve each situation in a fast and effective manner, and still enjoy the satisfactions of traveling and exploring the world.
